What You Should Know Before Going All-In on Allendale

By Maryanne Elsaesser

Close enough to the big city but with that small town charm you love – that about sums up the quaint town of Allendale. This affluent Bergen County suburb has an unmatched sense of community that makes it one of the most sought-after places to live in New Jersey. Quiet and safe neighborhoods coupled with an award-winning school district make Allendale the perfect town for families, and it truly has something for everyone.

Nature lovers will lose track of time at The Celery Farm, a 107-acre wetland preserve that is arguably the most peaceful place in the Garden State. Home to a wide variety of wildlife, there is always something amazing to look at while walking through the winding nature trails. Birders especially love this spot, as it boasts 250 recorded bird species, more than 50 of which are known to breed there.

Plus, right in town is Crestwood Park where locals can use athletic fields and swim in the lake, which freezes over in winter for ice skating. Crestwood Lake has a 1960s old world feel including three diving boards where you can watch kids practice their summersaults off the springboard, and you can also enjoy Pete and Mary's Concession with a substantial menu.

History buffs can head right across the street to visit the John Fell House, a Revolutionary War-era mansion and museum on three acres of land that hosts events year-round, including meetings, craft shows, and even weddings.

Foodie in the family? One trip to downtown Allendale will pique their interest and appetite. There’s everything from casual cafes and pubs to more upscale gourmet options. Local favorites include Savini for traditional Italian, Allendale Bar & Grill for burgers and bar fare, Masa Sushi with BYOB, and Nirvana for authentic Indian cuisine. Peppered between all the eateries are several boutiques and specialty shops, as well as the Allendale Town Center Mall.
